About Our Organization

College Prep at Penn Charter was developed by educators from William Penn Charter School and Simon Gratz High School. In 1971 Penn Charter teacher Joe Perrot was inspired to call Marcus Foster, the principal of Simon Gratz High School on Hunting Park Avenue. Recognizing the close proximity of the two schools, he proposed a program that would make Penn Charter’s resources available to Gratz students who wanted to pursue college. Since that time, College Prep has hosted students from Gratz and other neighborhood public high schools each summer for a program that develops their skills and supports their aspirations. College Prep students are exclusively from Philadelphia public and charter schools. In the past 50 years College Prep has worked with over 1,000 students in Philadelphia, many of whom have spent two summers committed to the program.

Our Program Offerings

College Prep

College Prep is an intensive five-week summer academic enrichment course with added year-round follow-up and group activities to help students maintain momentum throughout the college search and application process.  Our classes are discussion and project-based, and students are often amazed and encouraged by individualized attention from their teachers, interns, and even peers.  The program serves twenty-five rising 11th and 12th graders from Philadelphia public and charter schools and is held on William Penn Charter School’s campus in East Falls.

Equipment Support

Students are given a laptop to use in both of their summer sessions. At graduation after their second summer, students are given the laptop. This is for their school and personal use in the years ahead.

Financial Support

Upon completion of their second year in the program, College Prep graduates each receive a $300.00 college scholarship to be applied once accepted at a college/university. When students complete their second year in college, College Prep alum receive an additional $300.00 scholarship.

Networking Events

Alumni of the program have annual events to return to Penn Charter and connect with current College Prep students and alumni, as well as faculty. These occasions are opportunities for our team to connect with students, hear their stories, celebrate their progress, learn where they may need additional support, and connect them to other local alumni that can be a part of their future network.

Professional Opportunities

Each summer two intern positions are available and College Prep alumni are recruited and selected for these positions. This gives professional opportunities to our alumni, as well as providing a deeply valuable resource for our College Prep students, having a faculty member who has sat in their seats and is in the process of completing college.
